St. Valentin
St. Valentin auf der Haide
The southernmost village within the Graun municipality, St. Valentin auf der Haide is set against the picturesque backdrop of the Reschen Pass plateau, on the shores of the Haider lake. It is name after the Malser Heide (Mals heath), the largest debris cone in the Alps. The first settlements here date back to Roman times, and both the village and its surroundings are places full of history and with stories to tell.
The idyllic Haider lake
All our holiday apartments command a wonderful view of the nearby Haider lake – a natural lake that attracts fishermen, ice-boaters and snow kiters alike. It provides a most atmospheric backdrop for romantic walks in every season… both along its shores and on its frozen waters during winter.

Lake Reschen
Famous landmark and filming location
Take a cruise on the Hubertus, Europe’s highest tourist boat, across the lake to discover the recent history of this lake, brought to international fame by the Netflix series “Curon”. You will have the opportunity to discover how the iconic church tower – now a popular postcard motif – came to be half-submerged by the waters. The lake is also a perfect location for kiting, fishing and leisurely paddle boat tours.
Local traditions and customs
“Sacred Heart Sunday”, which takes place every year at the end of June, is an absolute highlight throughout South Tyrol. Fires in the shape of hearts and crosses are lit on the mountain peaks to commemorate the Tyrolean freedom fighters and the Battle of Bergisel. The Krampus and St. Nicholas processions in December are hugely popular throughout the region, and not just with the children. Here in Dörfl, the ancient Scheibenschlag tradition is still very much alive. Originally a fertility ritual and a way of driving out winter, this February event involves flinging glowing pine discs from the mountain down into the valley, and is supposed to bring blessings and good luck.
